This is going to be a very short post, because I couldn’t sit through the whole movie. It was just too scary.
I am Legend is a 2007 feature film adaption of Richard Matheson’s 1954 sci-fi horror novel of the same name. There are two earlier versions – The Last Man on Earth (1964) and The Omega Man (1971). The main protagonist is Robert Neville, played by Will Smith. The movie is set in Manhattan in 2012. Neville is a virologist who is miraculously immune to a genetically re-engineered measles virus that had originally been hailed as a cure for cancer.
Instead, it infected human beings throughout New York City – and possibly the rest of the world – with a strange disease that made its victims extremely aggressive, removed the pigmentation of their skin and made them terrified of UV radiation. So the ‘infected’ spend their days hiding in dark places and underground, emerging after sunset to hunt anyone who still remains.
Neville spends the nights in a self-created fortress at home with his beautiful retriever dog Sam. During the daytime he forages for food and supplies throughout the city, and conducts experiments to find a cure for the virus.
I found all the encounters with the vicious creatures quite frightening, particularly because of the roaring and screaming sounds associated with them. So I only managed to watch the first little bit.
I’m such a wimp.
