We watched “The Dark is Rising” on DVD tonight. It is a 2007 movie adaptation of the second book in a five-book children’s fantasy series “The Dark is Rising” by Susan Cooper. I had never heard of it before, but now that I’ve seen the movie, I’m really keen to read the books. Hopefully the local library will have the set.
To summarise the plot briefly, the main protagonist is Will Stanton, a teenage boy who starts to have some rather strange experiences on his 14th birthday. He encounters a group of people who have been hovering on the periphery of his life for a while, and who seem to know much more about him and his powers than he does. They reveal to him that he is the last of a group of warriors (who call themselves The Light) and who have dedicated their lives fighting against evil (appropriately called The Dark). Will has to travel through time in order to find six signs that will give him the power to confront The Dark, whose representative is The Rider, a frightening black-clad figure on a white horse.
I really don’t want to spoil the plot for anyone who hasn’t watched it. If you’re into fantasy books, with warriors on horses, heroes on magical quests, battles between Light and Dark, and such like, then you will be swept away by the magnificence of this movie.
And only read the Wikipedia article after you’ve watched it. 🙂
