Birds with pointy beaks

At lunchtime today, I spotted a pair of hadedas in our back-garden. They were busy puncturing holes in the lawn (hopefully extracting the baaaad larvae and leaving the goooood earthworms).

As I rarely see them in our garden (they tend to perch on the massively tall pinetree next door, screeching angrily at everyone and the world), I of course grabbed my camera and tried to sneak up on them. But they must have had a guilty conscience, because they levitated up onto the wendy house roof as soon as they spotted me.

Given the size of that curved beak, I think it was probably a good thing that we kept some distance between us. Aren’t they gorgeous creatures though?
