Welcome to my World!
This blog grew out of a desire to share with others my enthusiasm for getting to know my neighbourhood and my city - and hopefully more parts of South Africa and beyond!
The Cape Peninsula is an extraordinarily beautiful place: we have an iconic world-famous mountain right in the heart of Cape Town, wonderful and easily accessible hiking trails all over the mountain, and a fascinating history, culture and society just waiting to be explored.
Hover your mouse over each of the menus (Exploring the Cape, Getaways, Hikes and Rambles, Travel, Home and Garden, Entertainment and Defence Reserves) to access archived posts in those categories.
Happy Browsing!

The creator of the nightly spider web
After showing you all the spider web that dangled off our washing line this morning, I thought I’d see whether I could spot the creator of said web. Fortunately, it was a fairly windstill night, and spidey must’ve been rather … Continue reading
Spider webs and wasps nests: Unexpected hazards near the washing line
Do you remember the posts I wrote about the two nocturnal spiders who make their nest every evening between our carport roof and the washing line, or thereabouts? December 2009 – Two hyperactive spiders January 2010 – Two hunting spiders … Continue reading

Arachne has moved
When I got up this morning, I did a slow, careful tour of the house, checking ceilings and corners, making my way towards the lounge, where I’d seen Arachne hanging around last night. I inspected the bathroom…. the kitchen… the … Continue reading

Arachne is still hanging around…
A globular body with eight twitching legs and as many eyes watched me eating my breakfast of muesli and fruit this morning. It was kind of freaky. I’m afraid I didn’t chew each bite quite as often as nutritionists recommend … Continue reading

Sigh…
The three of us watched the DVD of ‘Smart People’ tonight. That’s me and Tuffy-Cat curled up on the sofa. And Arachne here on the ceiling. The movie was great, and supper was delicious. But as you can imagine, one … Continue reading

Do you remember that I told you (here and here) about the two spiders that emerge every night to weave their sticky webs between the carport roof and the washing line? Well, the one spider seems to be growing! This … Continue reading

In the dark of night, two spiders a-hunting go
Every evening, when we retreat into our house for the night, two small (well, no longer QUITE so small as they were when we first saw them towards the end of last year) spiders emerge from their hiding places near … Continue reading

Two hyperactive spiders
Last night, we returned home to find two spiders busy constructing an intricate web. Two webs, to be precise. Right next to each other. Their webs were suspended between the roof of the carport and the washing line, and – … Continue reading

Spider postscript
In case you want to know what happened to the eight-legged monster that invaded our little sanctuary on Thursday, here it is. When I returned home from work, “Bertha” was still huddled in the same corner of the hallway. Yes, … Continue reading
