Welcome to my World!
This blog grew out of a desire to share with others my enthusiasm for getting to know my neighbourhood and my city - and hopefully more parts of South Africa and beyond!
The Cape Peninsula is an extraordinarily beautiful place: we have an iconic world-famous mountain right in the heart of Cape Town, wonderful and easily accessible hiking trails all over the mountain, and a fascinating history, culture and society just waiting to be explored.
Hover your mouse over each of the menus (Exploring the Cape, Getaways, Hikes and Rambles, Travel, Home and Garden, Entertainment and Defence Reserves) to access archived posts in those categories.
Happy Browsing!

The latest newsletter of Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary
I have just received the latest newsletter from Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary – the last newsletter of the year, as the hard-working staff have earned themselves a break over the festive season. Do not fear, though – the furry-long-eared-four-leggeds will continue … Continue reading

Celebrating St Francis Day 2011 with the donkeys of Eseltjiesrus
At the start of October, we took a drive to the village of McGregor, which is the home of the Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary. Having attended last year’s St Francis Day and Remembrance Ceremony at the sanctuary (which I wrote about … Continue reading
A Sunflower from Eseltjiesrus is surviving winter in Cape Town
When we visited Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary during a whirlwind week in February this year, to introduce our respective moms to our adopted Donkey, we saw that all the sunflowers outside the cute little shop were in full bloom. We picked … Continue reading
Our adoptee Donkey is doing well!
A couple of days ago, a delightful email arrived in my inbox from the Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary outside the small village of McGregor. In July last year, during a long weekend in the mountains near McGregor, we had spent an … Continue reading

What’s the link between donkeys, jellybeans and school?
OK, I admit, that’s not an easy question to answer, unless you bought the Weekend Argus of 5 February 2011 and, instead of tossing away all the small inner sections and focusing solely on the sports and the business sections, … Continue reading

On Sunday, 3 October 2010, we joined our good friends V and L on a trip out to the pretty village of McGregor to attend a moving and heartwarming St Francis Day ceremony at Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary. We had visited … Continue reading
Our Donkey Adoption Certificate has arrived!
Look! We are now the proud adoptive parents of a gorgeous four-legged, long-eared, snuggle-furry donk named, well, Donkey. I am soooo chuffed. In addition to the certificate, we also received a report about our new furry friend, a beautiful handpainted … Continue reading
An unforgettable birthday weekend in the Riviersonderend Mountains
On Friday, 16 July 2010, we headed in the direction of McGregor for an extended weekend away in the Riviersonderend mountains, to celebrate my birthday (and that of Madiba) on 18 July. We stayed in a little Kliphuisie (or stone … Continue reading
